(un)Haunting

Eventually, I do fall back asleep, my body spent and filled with enough new energy that I need to digest. When my alarm goes off a few hours later, I drag myself from sleep to find Emil gone. Pillows hug my back in a poor replacement of the ice demon, and his scent still lingers on my sheets, ozone and new snow heavy in the air.

I roll onto my back and stretch. Time to get things done.

Tally offered to take the opening shift again today so I can meet Xander and Reese at the haunted house to deal with that whole mess. They’re doing me a favor, and I can’t keep them waiting. My eyelids drag, and I force myself to roll out of bed before sleep claims me once more.

After I shower and dress, I stumble downstairs to the living room and freeze. Tobias’s broken chair is missing, an identical replacement in its place. If I didn’t know better, I’d think it was the exact same chair.

I wander over to it and touch the leather arm to make sure my mind isn’t playing tricks on me. Soft, supple leather warms against my fingertips. When did Kellen get this? I thought we were going shopping together. Am I supposed to just give him money now? While I’m happy to not have this hanging over me anymore, disappointment fills me. I was looking forward to shopping with Kellen.

Leaving the chair for now, I go to the kitchen to grab a quick breakfast before I head out. A coffee cup waits on the counter with a sticky note on top. The familiarity of the scene makes me smile. The guys did this my first day at the bakery, too.

My steps hurry, and I snatch up the pink square. Blocky handwriting fills the paper.
